SLOW DOWN

by Michael Davis on March 08, 2024

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Ferris Bueller

The other day, my daughter Reilly asked me this question…

“So dad, what’s God been doing in your life lately?”

After struggling for a few moments to gather my thoughts as to how to answer such a thoughtful question (thank you, Reilly), I shared with her a few things I think God’s been doing. We talked about that for a bit and then I went to bed, and she continued in her studies to be a nurse.

As I laid in bed that night, I was not thinking so much about her question but my answer…

‘Is that what God is really doing in my life, or did I just give my daughter a ‘spiritually sounding’ response because I could not really articulate well what God is up to?’

Sometimes people ask us thought provoking questions that in the moment, we just do not know how to answer… I totally get that. But then there are questions, like the one Reilly asked me, that I want to have not only an immediate response to but a meaningful response to.

God is always at work… Jesus made that super clear (
John 5:17). And because God is always at work, in theory, we should always be able to give voice to God’s work in, or around, or through our lives.

I understand that we might not always
understand the work that God is doing, and I certainly would concede that there are seasons where it’s harder to ‘see’ His work, but generally speaking, because God is always at work, we should be able to give voice to His activity.

Ferris Bueller. Did you see the movie? Very popular in the mid-80’s. After my conversation with Reilly, I was reminded of something Mr. Bueller said about life moving pretty fast.

I could be wrong, but I wonder if our struggle to articulate well the work of God at any moment on any given day has everything to do with the pace of life we’re living. Sometimes,
not always, but sometimes we get so busy trying to stay afloat with our activities that we miss the activity of God.

I don’t know who needs to read these words right now, but if it’s you, I hope you’ll take them to heart…

SLOW DOWN.

For just a moment, slow down and simply reflect upon God’s activity in your life. And because God is good, His work in your life is good. And to be clear, good does not always mean easy, but God’s good is getting us to look more and more like Jesus.

Thank you,
LORD, for your work in our lives.

Thank you, Reilly, for asking your dad such a thoughtful question.

And thank you GENESIS for saying ‘yes’ to the collective work that the LORD is doing in and through our community.
