DISCOVER PRAYER

by Michael Davis on September 15, 2023

“In the second half of my adult life, I discovered prayer.”

Timothy Keller

Have you discovered prayer yet?
I’m not sure I have… not yet, at least.

I’ve been told prayer is important. I’ve told others of the importance of prayer. I’ve read a lot on prayer.  I’ve preached a lot on prayer. I’ve listened to a lot of sermons on prayer. I think about prayer a lot… like a lot!

But I wonder in my “a lot” of activity in and around prayer if I’ve actually discovered prayer… at least as God intends.

Here’s what I know about prayer…

  • Prayer is relationship.
  • Prayer is conversation.
  • Prayer is listening.
  • Prayer is speaking.
  • Prayer is silence.
  • Prayer is presence.
  • Prayer is stillness.
  • Prayer is slowness.
  • Prayer is hard.
  • Prayer is work.
  • Prayer is power.
  • Prayer is good.

For all that prayer is… and it’s so much more than what I’ve laid out above, prayer is above all else, a choice.  Will we choose to discover what God has for us when He calls us to “Never stop praying.”?  Will we choose to discover what Jesus has for us on the other side of “always pray and never give up.”?

In 108 days, we will enter into a season of 21 Days of Prayer.  As for me, and I’m inviting you to journey with me, I want to discover prayer.  I want that because if I’m being honest, I don’t think I have yet.  I know God has more for me… more for you in prayer than we might be currently experiencing.

For starters, let’s keep it super simple.  Seeing that prayer is a choice, let’s begin with choosing to pray when we feel the ‘tug’ towards prayer.  When the thought or idea comes that you should pray, well, stop what you’re doing in the moment to have a moment of prayer.  It might be 30-seconds, or it could be 3 minutes.  Either way, when it’s on your heart to pray make the choice to pray in that moment.
