LIVE SMALL… SEE GOD BIG.
That’s the note I wrote in my journal after reading the opening verse of
2 Samuel chapter 2, verse 1. Here’s what that verse says…
“David asked the LORD…”
Before we look at what David asked the LORD for, let me ask you to consider the question I wrestled with…
"How OFTEN do you ask the LORD?’
Is it just in the big things?
Decisions related to family or friendships?
Decisions related to finances or future career shifts?
Decisions related to big purchases… a car… a vacation package?
As we all know, we make a ton of decisions every single day. Some decisions don’t get a ton of thought, things like, ‘What shall I wear today?’, whereas other decisions carry a bit more weight, things like, ‘How will I interact with those I’ll see today that I’m not all that excited to see today?’
I think you get the point… we make a ton of decisions every single day… some small… some big… and LOTS of decisions that fall somewhere between the two.
So, back to my initial question…
"How OFTEN do you ask the LORD?’
In other words, before you make a decision to do something, do you ask the LORD whether you should or not? If your answer is, ‘Well, it depends.’ If that’s your answer, then let’s consider this question…
“Do you want to see the LORD work in your life… through your life?”
I’m guessing most of us… actually, I take that back, I believe ALL of us would say, “YES! I 100% want to see the LORD at work in and through my life!”
Here’s the thing, because we ALL want to see the LORD at work in and through our lives, well, that won’t happen if we’re not inviting the LORD to speak into the decisions we’re making throughout the day.
Maybe think about it like this… if we desire to see God at work in and through our lives, that desire must be married to our commitment to seek His leadership in the many moments and decisions that make up our day-to-day lives.
Put it this way, if at the end of our day we’re struggling to see WHERE or HOW the LORD was at work in and/or through our life that day, we simply must reflect upon…
‘Where did we seek the LORD’s leadership throughout our day?’
King David was able to see the LORD at work because He consulted the LORD in all that He was doing. Back to 1 Samuel 2… here’s what King David sought the LORD on…
“David asked the LORD, “Should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?” “Yes,” the LORD replied. Then David asked, “Which town should I go to?” “To Hebron,” the LORD answered.”
2 Samuel 2:1 (NLT)
And just so you know, as you read on in this chapter, David went exactly where the LORD wanted him to go, and consequently, David continued to see the LORD move in and through his life.
As I continued through 2 Samuel this week, I was reminded once again that when we do or go or say exactly what the LORD requires of us in the many moments that make up our day, without fail, we will see God do what God loves to do… WORK IN AND THROUGH OUR LIVES.
If you are familiar with the story of King David, he was far from a perfect man… far from it. But as you pay attention to his story, time and time again we see David ‘ASKING THE LORD’ as to what his next move should be. And consequently, Samuel records this of King David…
“David became more and more powerful because the LORD God of Heaven’s Armies was with him.”
2 Samuel 5:10 (NLT)
LIVE SMALL… SEE GOD BIG.
Living small simply means inviting God to speak into your next move regardless of how big or small you deem your next move to be. Like David, as we invite the LORD to lead and we follow, we will have a few stories to share of how the LORD is with us because we are with Him.
