“The one thing I ask of the Lord— the thing I seek most— is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple.”
Psalm 27:4 (NLT)
One thing. Not two, or three or ten – just one thing? I don’t know about you, but I can’t remember the last time I prayed just one thing? Often, my prayers look more like a shopping list with all sorts of things on it. One thing – really? How is that possible? Did this prayer even last 21 seconds?
Maybe David (the author of Psalm 27) just didn’t have much going on in his life when he penned these words. Or maybe David forgot his shopping list when he showed up in prayer that day. Or maybe, just maybe, David figured out something in prayer that I have missed for most of my life. Maybe you’ve missed it too.
ONE THING THAT SHAPES ALL THINGS
In all reality David had plenty of things to pray about. David was not yet the King of Israel when he prayed Psalm 27:4. He had already received the promise that he would be the king one day, but that day had not yet come.
Imagine how much you’d have on your mind if you were told that you were going to be the ruler of a nation. Imagine how often your mind would wander to the money you’d be in charge of, or the army that you’d be in control of, or the honor, esteem, and respect that people would soon be giving to you as king.
The promise of kingship was given years before Psalm 27:4 was penned so I’m guessing David is wondering to himself…
“So God, this whole me being king… is that like a next week thing? Am I a month or two out? Or are we talking more like decades from now?”
And if David is not yet king, that meant someone else was. And guess what, the current king (his name was Saul) was not a huge fan of David. In fact, Saul was trying to hunt David down in order to kill him.
Clearly, this one-day, would-be king who was being hunted down by the current murderous king had more than one thing he could have talked to God about… but he didn’t. David just prayed one thing because He was well aware that…
ONE THING THAT SHAPES ALL THINGS.
As you and I begin the 2nd week in our 21 Days of Prayer, I want to invite you to join me in praying ONE THING. You might have MANY THINGS happening right now, but I wonder if this is the season where God wants to show you and I that there is…
ONE THING THAT SHAPES ALL THINGS.
Take some time to pray…
“More of you God… that’s the ONE THING I want… more of You!”
