At the root of prayerlessness, at least in my life, is forgetting two things:
- What God is like.
- What God has done.
For a long time… like years and years, I told myself that my prayerlessness was the result of my A.D.D. or being super busy. Well, that may have contributed to it, but at the root level of prayerlessness is a loss of memory. Very specifically, forgetting what God is like and the ways in which we’ve already seen God move.
A ‘favorite’ passage of mine from the Old Testament is found in Deuteronomy…
“Be careful never to forget what you yourself have seen. Do not let these memories escape from your mind as long as you live!”
Deuteronomy 4:9 (NLT)
The message from God to the people of God…
DON’T FORGET… DON’T EVER FORGET.
In many ways, it’s really pretty simple. If we’d remember who God is, what He is like, and what He’s done to make relationship with Him possible, I don’t think we’d ever want to leave being in His presence. And if we’d only remember how God feels about us; namely, that He is pleased to call us His sons and daughters, I’m pretty confident that we’d get up extra early to be with Him just a bit longer.
This might not be true of you, but it is true of me… I am forgetful. And here’s the thing, when our memory of God, who He is and ALL He has done begins to fade… PRAYERLESSNESS.
As you begin DAY #6, maybe begin your time of prayer with one simple request… a request that just might change how you show up in prayer on DAY #7.
“God, flood my heart and head afresh memories of who You are and cause me to remember ALL that you have done for me. AMEN.”
