FRANCHISE ME

by on March 22, 2019

I have heard it said that McDonalds gives away more Heinz ketchup in their restaurants than Heinz ketchup actually sells in grocery stores. This means that, by volume, McDonalds freely gives away more tomato paste in little throw-away packets than Heinz sells in stores. That is an astonishing fact to me.

If this is true, it is not because McDonalds chases down the most exclusive food critics, trying to create a world class menu, or offers anything close to a fine dining experience. They are content to be average. They have no aspirations of becoming Capital Grille. They serve average food at an average price to average people, and they are making a global impact.

The power of McDonalds is not their excellent product or service, but that they have learned the power of franchising the average.

They have replicated themselves so many times, in so many locations, that they are now an unstoppable force, and almost impossible to avoid. There are few places on earth where you cannot find one. They are the world’s number one buyer of potatoes, apples, chicken, and beef. Global markets rise and fall when they change their menu.

They don’t have the best food. No one would ever make that claim. But they do have a great impact. No one, not even Capital Grille, comes close.

As Christians, it is okay to be average. In fact, Jesus did not command us to produce only a few experts of Christianity. He commanded all of us to be a massive, unstoppable army of multipliers who blanket the earth with disciples.

To do that, we must be content with being average. We must catch the vision for what we can do together instead of what only a few can do with excellence. We must pour out our lives into the lives of others, franchising faithful followers of Christ everywhere Christ has not yet been named.

We will have an impact if we do that. We will see the great commission completed if we do that. And we will see our Lord and Savior return to a church who is faithful to His mission.
