Week #2 of Ecclesiastes is in the books, and if you missed the latest message, you can check that out here — SAME OL’ SAME OL’.
As I mentioned in last week’s devotional, I’m going to use this space to dig a little deeper into themes I couldn’t fully unpack on Sunday. And as I mentioned before, Ecclesiastes is a dense, honest, and beautifully complex book. And often what makes this book so beautifully complex are the WORDS the Teacher (King Solomon) uses.
YITRON… this is a word that shows up only in Ecclesiastes — nowhere else in the Old Testament, and nowhere in the New Testament. Point being, King Solomon isn’t pulling a familiar Hebrew word off the shelf, rather, he’s introducing a new word to describe a universal ache.
The Hebrew word YITRON is often translated “gain,” but that barely scratches the surface.
YITRON means:
surplus…
profit…
advantage…
something left over…
something that remains…
something you can keep…
It’s an economic word — but King Solomon uses it spiritually.
YITRON is the lasting return you hope your life will produce.
It’s the thing you think will finally make all your effort “worth it.”
It’s the permanent benefit you believe your striving will secure.
In modern language, YITRON is the payoff or the return on investment.
It’s the belief that if we work hard enough, achieve enough, build enough, or succeed enough, something meaningful will remain. Something permanent. Something that justifies the grind.
So when Solomon asks… “What YITRON do people get from all their hard work under the sun?” — he’s asking a brutally honest question:
“What LASTING ADVANTAGE does all our striving actually give us?”
And Solomon’s answer after a lifetime of wisdom, wealth, accomplishment, and experience, well, it’s incredibly sobering…
THERE IS NO YITRON UNDER THE SUN.
SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND…
Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes at the end of his life. That means the people hearing this weren’t distant descendants or post‑exilic communities.
They were his people, living in the very kingdom he built.
They had watched Solomon rise.
They had seen his wisdom.
They had benefited from his prosperity.
They had admired his accomplishments.
They had lived in the golden age of Israel.
If anyone’s life should have produced YITRON, it was Solomon’s.
So… when Solomon stands before them — old, reflective, brutally honest and says: “I chased every version of meaning the world offers… and none of it produced YITRON,” — well, the people of God would have felt the weight of that confession.
And here’s WHY I say that…
Solomon was the one man in Israel whose life looked like it should have produced YITRON.
He was the man who had…
unmatched wisdom…
unmatched wealth…
unmatched achievement…
unmatched influence…
unmatched opportunity.
If anyone could stand up and say…
“Look at my life… look at what remains,” it was King Solomon.
So, when that man… the man at the top… the man with everything says:
“I chased every version of meaning the world offers…and none of it produced YITRON,” — well, it dismantles the illusion for everyone else.
In other words, if YITRON cannot be found at the top, it certainly cannot be found anywhere ‘under the sun.’
NOT TO BE MISSED
YITRON never appears again.
Not in the prophets.
Not in the Psalms.
And not in the New Testament.
But the ache behind YITRON… well, that longing is found throughout God’s Word.
Jesus doesn’t use the Hebrew word YITRON, but He speaks directly to the human craving Solomon is naming.
FOR EXAMPLE…
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… but store up treasures in heaven.”
Matthew 6:19–20 (NLT)
Jesus is saying exactly what Solomon said… there is no lasting gain under the sun but there is LASTING GAIN ABOVE THE SUN.
Or consider Jesus’ question…
“What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?”
Mark 8:36 (NLT)
That word “profit” is the Greek equivalent of YITRON’S idea… the return, the surplus, the advantage. Point being… Jesus is asking what Solmon asked and His answer is the same… NO PROFIT.
Or consider Jesus’ promise…
“I chose you… that you should bear fruit that will last.”
John 15:16 (NLT)
Solomon says… “Nothing lasts under the sun.”
Jesus says… “In Me, something finally can.”
Solomon gives us the diagnosis…
THERE IS NOT YITRON UNDER THE SUN.
Jesus gives us the cure…
THERE IS YITRON {OR} LASTING GAIN IN HIM.
Solomon exposes the ache… Jesus FULFILLS it.
Thankfully, Solomon’s confession in Ecclesiastes 2:3 shatters the myth that…
more wisdom…
more pleasure…
more success…
more wealth…
more achievement…
will finally give us the lasting GAIN we’re looking for.
And thankfully, Jesus reiterates the heart of Solomon by helping us to see that…
the right job…
the right relationship…
the right income…
the right house…
the right version of ourselves…
None of that will give us YITRON.
THE GOOD NEWS…
Once we stop looking for YITRON under the sun, then and only then will we lift our eyes above the sun to the ONE who can give us a gain that lasts through eternity.
HOW DO WE DO THAT?
Start with giving voice the one place where you’ve been asking life to give you what only Jesus can give. And wherever that might be, simply pray… “Jesus, I’m looking to You for my gain.”
Every time you turn your attention toward Jesus… every time you surrender a place where you’ve been chasing YITRON under the sun… be encouraged to know that you are LIFTING your eyes to the One who is your lasting gain. And when you do that, Jesus gives you what life under the sun never can… a gain that remains, a peace that holds, and a joy that doesn’t evaporate.
