I Visited on Easter...Now What?

by Kyle Asmus on April 23, 2019

We’re now on the backside of the Easter swell—the influx of guests that every church has around Holy Week.

Perhaps you’re a part of that swell. You don’t attend church all that regularly unless it coincides with a holiday because that’s what your family has always done. Or, maybe you’ve never really gone to church, but you had a really pesky friend who kept inviting you, you finally gave in, and now he or she has forwarded this blog for you to read.

You might still be thinking about what exactly happened on Sunday. You have questions like, “Wait, why did people get in a water tank?” “Why were people singing so loudly?” “Why was everyone so excited to see me?”

You might even be considering going back to church this weekend, but you have some hesitations. You’re worried about joining an antiquated cult-like religion. You’re worried about being hit up for money with the ol’ bait and switch. And you’re not sure what going to church would mean for your social life and practices.

If any of that describes you, let me just say, great questions and valid concerns.

One thing I’ve learned in my time working in the church is that everyone comes with a different story. Some people grow up with faith and everything comes kind of… easy for them. No real moments of spiritual crisis. Not a ton of questions. Just easy. Other people come with real baggage. Church hurt. Victimization. Disbelief.

All that to say, wherever you fall in that spectrum, it’s ok to ask questions and raise concerns.

But if you still can’t shake that Easter high, here are 3 things I’d encourage you to do.

Stop Flying Solo
There are very few things we can figure out in life without the help of someone else. In almost everything, we need to surround ourselves with other people to help us sort through our questions. Spiritual things are no exception. If you have questions, ask someone to answer them! Ask the friend who invited you to church. Message one of the leaders. Find ways to engage with people who have wrestled through the same questions you have.

Stalk the Website
If you’re brand new to GENESIS, you’re probably wondering who we are and what we’re about. Are you curious about our church’s story? Are you interested in watching other sermons to see what a non-Easter gathering is like? Maybe you’d like to read other blogs to learn what our leaders are thinking and writing about? All of this can be found on our website. If you want to know more, do the background check!

Give it a Month
Commit 4 Sunday mornings to going to church. See what happens if you spend 4 hours out of the next month at GENESIS. Don’t drag your feet. Jump in. Most opportunities missed in life are not a result of failure, but of never even trying. And in the grand scheme of things, what’s 4 Sundays? It will either be 240 minutes you won’t get back or it will change your life.
