If you have been around GENESIS for any length of time at all, then you will have heard us talking about “a walk with God”. Perhaps you have seen our mission statement plastered on the wall, printed on cards, or maybe you have simply heard us talking about “helping ALL people walk with God”. But what does that mean?
For us, a walk with God simply means being in relationship with Him. And, like all human relationships, a walk with God has two necessary components:
- opportunities for intimate connection.
- those involved to be walking in the same direction.
It would not be good for my wife and I if we had no meaningful opportunities to connect. Eventually our love would grow stale, and we would would feel as if we had drifted apart. And, as hard as it can be for us to find those moments in a house filled with noise and complicated by busy schedules, it is imperative that we fight for those sacred moments together! It is for our own personal good and for the good of our relationship that we fight for intimate moments.
In the same way, we cannot remain healthy if we are walking in different directions. At the moment we are in the process of moving, which means we are renting U-Haul trucks, and scouring the earth for boxes. But, it would be no good if we were not intending to move to the same city or the same house. If we were walking through life in different directions our marriage would certainly suffer!
This tells me that healthy and growing relationships require opportunities for intimacy and a commitment from both people to walk in the same direction!
HOW WILL THIS HELP US WALK WITH GOD?
God is a relational God and has created our human relationships to reflect that. He created us for relationship with Him and expects us to connect with Him and walk in the direction He is going. If we want to have a healthy and growing walk with God,f then we need real opportunities to connect with Him and be moving in the same direction as Him.
WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE?
We need intimate time in His Word,learning about who He is and what kinds of things He has done for us. We need to spend time listening to the Spirit and getting to know the God who has done everything in order to pursue us! We are God’s bride! He longs to intimately connect with us. Sure, life is complicated, but it is for our own good and for the good of our relationship with God that we fight for intimate moments with Him!
In the same way, we also need to be walking in the same direction as God. We cannot expect to have a thriving relationship with God if we are unwilling to walk in the direction He is calling us to go!
WHAT IS A WALK WITH GOD?
A walk with God is a growing healthy relationship with Him. That happens when we are pursuing intimate times of connection with Him (reading the Word, praying, fasting, worshiping, etc.) and when we are walking in the same direction as Him.
