Walking With God

by Michael Davis on July 15, 2015

God created you to walk with Him. That’s it – God desires that you’d walk with Him.  Is that the only thing He desires for you?  No.  But our ability to walk with God will be the one thing that gives shape to everything else we do.

For me, it’s humbling to think that the God of the universe would not only desire to walk with me, but that He’d do everything to make that walk, that relationship possible.  Humanity, and I mean all of us decided to walk away, to walk in our direction, but God loved humanity, and I mean all of us enough to send His One and only Son with one invitation – ‘Come follow me.”

What if we did follow?  What would happen to the world we live in if we treated Jesus’ invitation as more than just a kind gesture towards us and a way of life?

We begin to look like those that we walk with; and those that walk with Jesus will begin to look like Him; and those that look like Him will begin to change that world as He did.

Jesus will meet you where you are every day, but everyday Jesus will take you to where you need to be.  In short, walking with Jesus, that is to say walking with God will leave you looking more and more like Him every day.  And those that look like Jesus are the ones that will be used by God to stir a hunger in those around them that a walk with Jesus is exactly what they have been searching for.

For some, this will seem way too oversimplified, but I am convinced that if we’d just do the very thing that we were created to do… walk with God, our world and the world we live in would look radically different.  When Jesus came, He did not give us a detailed checklist of how to fix our lives and the world around us.  He just simply invited us to ‘follow Him’ knowing that those that followed Him would begin to look like Him and those that look like Him will be used by God to change the world.

One last thought from my friend Brennan Manning… I could not agree with him anymore!

“If indeed we lived in imitation of His, our witness would be irresistible. If we dared to live beyond our self-concern, if we refused to shrink from being vulnerable, if we took nothing but a compassionate attitude toward the world, if we were counter-cultural to our nation’s lunatic lust for pride of place, power & possessions, if we preferred to be faithful, rather than successful, the walls of indifference to Jesus Christ would crumble. A handful of us could be ignored by society, but hundreds, thousands, millions of such servants would overwhelm the world. Christians filled with the authenticity, commitment & generosity of Jesus would be the most spectacular sign in the history of the human race. The call of Jesus is revolutionary. If we implemented it, we would change the world in a few months.”
