Can You See It Now?

by Michael Davis on October 02, 2014

Just because you cannot see it, does not mean there’s nothing there.

Pain, suffering, hurt, confusion, uncertainty – all of these have a blinding effect on our lives.  The moment any of these things enter into the situation or circumstance we find ourselves in, we often lose the ability to see beyond what we can feel.

Just because you cannot see it, does not mean there’s nothing there.

They were free, but those who set them free changed their mind.  They wanted them back and so they began chasing them down in the desert.  Before the people of Israel was the Red Sea and behind the people of Israel was Egypt’s army in hot pursuit.

Just because you cannot see it, does not mean there’s nothing there.

I can’t fathom the fear that they must have felt.

I cannot fathom the uncertainty they must have felt in not knowing whether they’d live or die.

I cannot fathom the disappointment they must have felt in being promised freedom only to have those who enslaved them seeking to enslave them once again.

Just because you cannot see it, does not mean there’s nothing there.

The people were told by Moses ‘to not fear… to stand still… and watch the Lord rescue them.’ (See Exodus 14:13).  Encouraging words for certain, but when water is in front of you – meaning, there is no way to escape the world’s most powerful army behind you, seeing anything other than what’s visible (water & army) blinds you from what I’ll call ‘unseen roads.’

This morning (10/2/14) as I was reading through the Psalms, I came across the following Psalm that opened my eyes to see and compelled my heart to proclaim that…

Just because you cannot see it, does not mean there’s nothing there.

Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters— a pathway no one knew was there!Psalm 77:19

God could see the pathway – He knew it was there the whole time.  The people did not see it, and I’m convinced the people did not even know that a pathway through the water was even possible.  But it was possible and it was right in front of them the whole time.

Far too many times my vision – what I can see, is completely dictated by the situation or circumstance that I find myself in.  And, the greater the pain, hurt, confusion or disappointment I may be experience in that moment, the greater my inability is to see what might actually be right in front of me.

I don’t know what ‘uncertainty’ you may be facing today, but God used this Pslam to remind me, inspire me and encourage me that…

Just because you cannot see it, does not mean there’s nothing there.

This was my prayer after reading this Psalm today…

Lord, help me to see what I cannot see, but I know you can see.  Help me to see the path that you’ve called me to travel… even if it’s a path that is filled with all sorts of uncertainty.  Lord, please let my vision not be dictated by what I can see, but let my vision be consistent with you who are – and you are One who can create pathways that no one else ever could.
